I’m excited to share a Huge update with you. As many of you know, my artist name has been Manny714 for quite some time within the illustration and manga community. This name originated from an old email account I created when I first joined Gmail. I was a fan of *Final Fantasy VIII* and wanted to use “Lionheart,” but it was already taken. Google suggested “lionhart714,” which I liked and decided to use.
In my early 20s, I experimented with various names like Artscreamslife and 騎士714, but ultimately settled on Manny714, choosing a font I thought was fitting. While I appreciated the name, it sometimes felt like it didn’t capture welll... me. The “714” part felt more like a Twitter or Tumblr handle, and despite my attempts to embrace that style, it never quite fit my artistic vision.
I’ve always had mixed feelings about my name and its length, but friends and people I met often praised it, especially my last name, Knight. Now, as I’m in my 30s, I realize that my earlier discomfort was more about youthful uncertainty than any real issue with my name.
Meeting other amazing Black artists who proudly used their names while working in the manga field truly inspired me. It was as if the light bulb that had been switched off regarding my own name suddenly turned back on. I thought, “What am I doing? Why haven’t I been using my name all along? It’s right here.”
This is the original font for Manny714. I aimed for something elegant yet sharp, though I wasn't entirely clear on my vision at the time. While I do like the font, it wasn’t quite right and felt too devoid of color.
This is the new logo for my name, and I absolutely love it. It features vibrant colors and the initials were personally designed by me. I believe it captures a sense of joy, electricity, and elegance. It can be soft yet sharp, cartoony yet poignant—truly reflecting who I am and how I see myself at this stage of my life.
As I continue to work with various communities, clients, and connect with supporters of Magna AX, I’ve grown more comfortable being myself. In a way, I’ve grown into my name, and “Emmanuel Knight” feels right.
I prefer not to use the term “rebranding,” as it implies a corporate overhaul. Instead, think of this as a reintroduction—showcasing who I am and what I do. I’m one person who loves to draw, write, and connect with others.
So, hello! I’m Emmanuel Knight, a Brooklyn-born and based manga artist, illustrator, and workshop leader. I’m thrilled to have your continued support and curiosity.
What’s next?
You can still call me Manny—my nickname is here to stay. However, when presenting my work, I’ll proudly use my full name. Over the coming months into 2025, I’ll be updating my logos and social media to reflect this change. I’ll keep you updated through the newsletter and social media.
Thank you so much for your support!
